After you file: protect yourself

These steps are free and do the most good. None of them is needed to file a claim.

  1. Read the notice letter if you got one. It says what data was involved and may offer free credit monitoring with an enrollment deadline.
  2. Freeze your credit at all three bureaus: Equifax ↗, Experian ↗ and TransUnion ↗. It's free, stops most new accounts being opened in your name, and you can lift it when you apply for credit.
  3. Change reused passwords, starting with your email and bank accounts.
  4. Turn on two-factor authentication (a code or app prompt at sign-in) for email, banking and other important accounts.
  5. Watch your statements from your bank, cards and insurer for charges or claims you don't recognize.
  6. Check your credit reports for free at AnnualCreditReport.com ↗, the official free site. Look for accounts or inquiries you don't recognize.
  7. If someone used your information, report it at IdentityTheft.gov ↗ (FTC) for a free recovery plan.

Many settlements already offer free credit monitoring as a claim option, and breach letters often include free monitoring too. If you want monitoring, take the free one first.
